University of Rijeka – Medical studies in Rijeka

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rijeka is located in Rijeka’s picturesque old town. Founded in 1955, it has developed over the past six decades into one of the most prestigious medical faculties in the Adriatic region. Small class sizes allow for individualized support for students. Approximately half of the medical students in the international program come from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Many Italians also study here.

The university offers its students the opportunity to complete parts of their clinical training at the bedside in Germany during their fourth, fifth, and sixth years of study by participating in the Medistart Medical Schools teaching hospital pool. In addition to the high quality of the studies and the excellent learning environment, the University of Rijeka offers a variety of sporting and social activities organized by student associations. The pleasant Mediterranean and Central European atmosphere of the city complements the student experience.

Studying in RijekaRijeka

RijekaThe city of Rijeka lies about an hour south of Venice and Trieste on the Adriatic coast. With more than 120,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in Croatia and is situated in the bay of the same name, which forms the northern end of the island-rich Kvarner Gulf. A popular tourist destination, especially for visitors from Germany and Austria, Rijeka offers numerous cultural and scenic highlights.

Many residents of Rijeka and the surrounding villages speak German. Attendance at the Croatian courses organized by the university is free, but mandatory for the first three years. Rijeka is easily accessible from Germany – both by car and by plane, for example with Lufthansa daily via Venice and Trieste, or via Rijeka’s own airport, which is served by budget charter airlines from many German airports. The airport is located on the island of Krk, just a few kilometers away, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Requirements and application Rijeka

RijekaMedistart Medical Schools is an official cooperation partner of the university and has developed comprehensive preparation options for the admissions process. Your high school graduation grade is not decisive for admission. For dentistry, the university tests your manual dexterity. For human medicine, study places are allocated based on an entrance exam specifically developed for German high school graduates, for which Medistart Medical Schools provides optimal preparation. The test consists of a written section (60%) focusing on biology/chemistry/general knowledge and a motivation and aptitude interview (40%); it is usually held monthly in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich, but can also be completed entirely online at home ! Taking the test is possible and advisable even before graduating from high school.

If you haven’t taken two years of natural sciences like biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics in your last four years of high school, attending the MediStart College Semester in Hamburg or via online video conference can be beneficial. The MediStart College Semester is officially recognized by the university as preparation for university studies; your Medistart Medical Schools advisor will be happy to discuss your individual requirements and options. With individual coaching sessions, we prepare you for the entrance exam, either in person or online via video, so you can secure your place at university early. MediStart supports you from the very beginning, ensures a smooth process throughout the entire application phase, and provides on-site support. So that your studies abroad are a positive experience and a complete success.
